OneForce Blog-33: The Brain At Work (Part-1)

The brain’s most daunting task is to keep you alive!

The brain’s hardest task is how to deal with human society.

Perhaps the ability to cope with other people and get along with society has been the main force behind the growth of the human brain. If you think about it, the most complicated thing that an ancient human would meet in their lives would not be food, nor a tool, not a predator, but another person.

The bottom line is that it’s other people (and not the world itself) that’s difficult to deal with. To work out the motives of others, to persuade, to charm, to make friends and not enemies—all these takes brains.

We can see it in action with chimps: They are constantly vying with one another to become leader of the troop. A young male chimp is attempting to dethrone the older male. And while fights are certainly dramatic, often more important than just brute strength is the ability to forge alliances with other chimps. Brain over brawn. Chimps spend hours and hours picking through the hair of their colleagues. It’s called grooming and it’s the key to social climbing. The better chimps are at this social necessity, the more likely they are to rise among the ranks. Scientists have now discovered that the more complex the social groups of animal species belong to, the bigger its brain would be. An ability to deceive, to make allies, to win others over, must have been vital in the development of the chimp mind. Sound familiar?

Human societies are the most complicated of all living and created societies—there’s continual pressure to be number one! And where you look for it is in the corridors of power—executive and legislative branches of government!

While the ceremony of parliamentary life looked rather splendid, it’s the jostling that goes on behind the scenes that is often more important. Politicians haggle together in conspiratorial whispers—deals are made and broken. They are demonstrating skills that haven’t changed for millions of years.

We’re not chimps but it’s a jungle out there. And you don’t have to go to the houses of parliament to come across politics, all the time our brains are dealing with politics with a small “p”—gossip, flattery, backbiting, at home or in the office, it’s really just our way of getting along with people.

Excitement is writing about the Brain because it is the Essence of who we are. Trepidation is writing about the Brain because it is the least understood of all Organ.

TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE HUMAN BRAIN AND ITS WORK: We have an upcoming lecture.

OneForce Blog-30: The Brain and Emotions (Part-1)

Emotions are what make life worth living. They are indescribable experiences. Thoughts come and go inside our heads but moments of intense emotions take over us completely. They seem to involve far more than just thinking.

We experience emotions with our whole bodies. The clenching of the muscles with excitement, the beating of the heart with joy, and above all, we have the sensuality of relaxation—the sand between your toes, and the heat of the sun on your face, and the wind in your hair.

The search for things that feels good motivates everything we do—from playing with the children to going on holiday. But unlike most animals, we humans can take our time getting our emotional rewards.

The interesting about us is that we don’t get to live from moment to moment. We don’t expect instant pleasure—instead, we plan complex, long-term strategies that defer gratification. We prepare to work hard for the rest of the year to save money for two weeks of bliss (on the beach) under the sun.

Unraveling how our brains create emotions is an awesome challenge. Why do they feel the way they do? And how do they interwoven with our thought process?

Brain scientists know the secrets of emotions. They’re beginning to understand the intriguing and surprising ways in which feelings underpin every single moment of our lives.

For centuries, emotions have been the domain of artists and writers. At art and music theaters, crowds watch artist to perform just like it was in Shakespeare’s days.

Emotions are so variable and so personal that they seem to be out-of-reach of science. But looking at people’s faces, you know what they are feeling—even if you can’t explain why. Something about the facial expression conveys so much. And when you see these faces, you don’t necessarily translate them into words—you just know it, you feel it. We realize that our facial expressions are actually a powerful way to let others see what we are feeling. The most long-distance transmitter of all emotions, not surprisingly, is the smile—at 70 or 80 meters away—it’s just about the distance away you could throw a rock or a spear.

30 years ago, a young psychologist went to Papua New Guinea to make a landmark study of people’s facial expression. He went to live in the highlands of New Guinea with people who are considered the last stone-age culture on earth who had virtually no contact with the outside world. These natives had never seen a photograph in a magazine, a television, a film, nothing! He wanted to know whether the facial expressions of people in the industrialized world were different from facial expressions of these tribes. In other words, did facial expression change as the society developed or are they fixed and universal? Muscle for muscle, the facial expressions of these ancient isolated culture used was the same as our own.

The 6 basic and core expressions that he identified were happiness, sadness, disgust, surprise, anger, and fear.

When we watch a boxing tournament, we allow our primitive urges (which are normally suppressed) to take over. That’s the power of emotions—and Manny Pacman Pacquiao! In the early theory, emotion was completely separate from thought—but now we know that the brain doesn’t work in such a s simple way. Thoughts and emotions are totally intertwined—a mere thought can trigger an emotion!

Feeling the possibilities.

InternetCity Blog-6: From Manila Bulletin_Internet Cafe Owners Act on Image MakeOver

2009/11/22 2 comments

Internet café owners act on image makeover
By EDISON ONG
Manila Bulletin
November 1, 2009, 7:01pm

A federation of Internet café owners have begun to examine deeply their respective manners of conducting business in a move to command respect from local government authorities and their client-aficionadoes.

The deteriorating state of many community Internet cafés has alarmed the proponents behind I-Café Pilipinas.

“Madilim. Mabaho. Magulo. (Dark. Stinggy. Chaotic.),” these said Gener Luis Morada, National Advocacy Officer, I-Café Pilipinas, is how Internet cafés have come to be perceived and seen. “We want respect, yet we are like that. We can not command respect unless we make some changes.”

Morada appealed for support among his business colleagues at the recently held First National Internet Café Summit with the Theme: “Towards A Better Internet Café Industry in the Next Decade” at the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) building in Quezon City.

He emphasized, “We are the frontliners in the communities. We are an industry that must be respected. There is much work to be done.”

The summit brought together leaders of the different Internet café associations in the different parts of the country, Internet café operators who have expressed their willingness to join in the cause of improving the conditions of the Internet café industry, representatives from national government agencies and representatives from allied ICT industries.

The forum tackled vital issues affecting the Internet industry and things that can help in building a national program that would aid in the acceptance of I-Cafés as a vital part of the ICT industry in the Philippines; and finally organizing a single national federation of Internet café associations.

“The Internet cafés all over the country are reaching more Filipinos and at the same time providing access to the information highway. The popularity of the Internet cafés shows us the readiness of our people to use the Internet, and the CICT joins I-Café Pilipinas in looking for ways to improve our service for our people and in addressing the digital divide,” said CICT Secretary Ray Anthony Roxas-Chua III.

“We are also looking forward to the creation of a national organization which would become the unified voice for the Internet café industry”, he added.

Ed Zafra, Chair, I-Café Pilipinas, said their “figure on the ground is there are between 30,000 to 40,000 Internet-cafés” Thus, the I-Café owner is an integral part of today’s community by providing affordable Internet access to a majority of people who could not afford to have one at home or at work.

He explained that I-Café Pilipinas is a national network of Internet café owners, operators and association in the Philippines. It strives to become their voice on a national level to represent their interest on issues pertaining to efficient operation of their business.

The Internet café associations which participated were Valenzuela Internet Café Association, Internet Café Association of Manila, Los Baños Computer Owners and Operators League, Internet Café Association of Tagum, Internet Café Association of Imus, San Juan Internet Café Association, Internet Café Association of Zambales, Internet Café Association of Dasmariñas and members of the Unified Lanshop Owners of the Philippines.
