OneForce Blog-30: The Brain and Emotions (Part-1)

Emotions are what make life worth living. They are indescribable experiences. Thoughts come and go inside our heads but moments of intense emotions take over us completely. They seem to involve far more than just thinking.

We experience emotions with our whole bodies. The clenching of the muscles with excitement, the beating of the heart with joy, and above all, we have the sensuality of relaxation—the sand between your toes, and the heat of the sun on your face, and the wind in your hair.

The search for things that feels good motivates everything we do—from playing with the children to going on holiday. But unlike most animals, we humans can take our time getting our emotional rewards.

The interesting about us is that we don’t get to live from moment to moment. We don’t expect instant pleasure—instead, we plan complex, long-term strategies that defer gratification. We prepare to work hard for the rest of the year to save money for two weeks of bliss (on the beach) under the sun.

Unraveling how our brains create emotions is an awesome challenge. Why do they feel the way they do? And how do they interwoven with our thought process?

Brain scientists know the secrets of emotions. They’re beginning to understand the intriguing and surprising ways in which feelings underpin every single moment of our lives.

For centuries, emotions have been the domain of artists and writers. At art and music theaters, crowds watch artist to perform just like it was in Shakespeare’s days.

Emotions are so variable and so personal that they seem to be out-of-reach of science. But looking at people’s faces, you know what they are feeling—even if you can’t explain why. Something about the facial expression conveys so much. And when you see these faces, you don’t necessarily translate them into words—you just know it, you feel it. We realize that our facial expressions are actually a powerful way to let others see what we are feeling. The most long-distance transmitter of all emotions, not surprisingly, is the smile—at 70 or 80 meters away—it’s just about the distance away you could throw a rock or a spear.

30 years ago, a young psychologist went to Papua New Guinea to make a landmark study of people’s facial expression. He went to live in the highlands of New Guinea with people who are considered the last stone-age culture on earth who had virtually no contact with the outside world. These natives had never seen a photograph in a magazine, a television, a film, nothing! He wanted to know whether the facial expressions of people in the industrialized world were different from facial expressions of these tribes. In other words, did facial expression change as the society developed or are they fixed and universal? Muscle for muscle, the facial expressions of these ancient isolated culture used was the same as our own.

The 6 basic and core expressions that he identified were happiness, sadness, disgust, surprise, anger, and fear.

When we watch a boxing tournament, we allow our primitive urges (which are normally suppressed) to take over. That’s the power of emotions—and Manny Pacman Pacquiao! In the early theory, emotion was completely separate from thought—but now we know that the brain doesn’t work in such a s simple way. Thoughts and emotions are totally intertwined—a mere thought can trigger an emotion!

Feeling the possibilities.
